Differences matter most when they repeatedly shape the same decisions and neither partner can live comfortably with the other outcome. Children, religious practice, residence, money, work, caregiving, boundaries with relatives and treatment during conflict usually have greater practical reach than taste in music or food. Research does not support one universal compatibility formula, and personality similarity adds little by itself. The useful test is frequency, consequence and flexibility: how often will the difference arise, what will it cost, and can both people accept a fair compromise without resentment?
