Does having similar religious beliefs affect marital satisfaction?
Last reviewed:
Direct answer
Shared religious practice can make decisions about worship, children, food, social life and family obligations easier, but evidence on marital satisfaction is mixed. A large cross-cultural study found no satisfaction difference between Christians, Muslims and atheists after accounting for age, sex, marriage length, children, education and material situation. Other studies find benefits when couples share meaningful practices rather than merely the same label. Religious similarity may reduce one source of disagreement, but it does not substitute for kindness, communication or fair treatment.
