What is the purpose of a Walima?

Walima is the marriage feast traditionally associated with the groom and used to announce and celebrate the union through hospitality. In Pakistani practice it may be a separate reception after rukhsati, but size, timing and format vary widely. It is not a substitute for the nikah or its legal registration, and Pakistan’s marriage law does not make a banquet a condition of validity. The purpose can be fulfilled simply; debt, display or a large guest list are social choices rather than requirements created by the marriage contract.
