Is Mehndi a religious requirement or a cultural wedding tradition?

Mehndi is a South Asian cultural celebration, not a legal requirement for nikah and not one of the elements recorded in Pakistan’s prescribed marriage form. Pakistani cultural research documents henna, music, color and family gathering as changing social practices, with wide variation between households and communities. Calling the event cultural does not decide whether every activity within it is religiously acceptable; families make those judgments separately. A marriage remains legally registrable without a Mehndi, and holding one does not replace consent, nikah or registration.
