How important are expectations about caring for parents after marriage?

Answer

Direct answer

They matter because “supporting parents” can mean money, shared housing, daily care, frequent visits or responsibility during illness, and partners may imagine very different arrangements. Pakistan’s evidence on co-residence shows that living with a husband’s mother is common in some samples, while national household data cannot reduce care obligations to one joint-family percentage. A realistic discussion covers both sets of parents, siblings who share responsibility, privacy, budget, location and how care would change if a parent became dependent. Respectful care and unlimited availability are not the same commitment.
