How important is agreement about women's employment after marriage?

Answer

Direct answer

Agreement matters because “she may work” leaves major questions unanswered: occupation, hours, travel, childcare, income control, relocation and what happens after childbirth. Pakistan’s DHS recorded only 19% of married women working in the previous year compared with 98% of married men, while newer workplace research identifies childcare and family expectations as real constraints. A clear premarital discussion cannot guarantee circumstances will stay fixed, but it can show whether both people view employment as a shared household decision or permission that may be withdrawn unilaterally.
