What should be clarified before a rishta becomes an engagement?

Answer

Direct answer

Before an engagement, the couple and families should have a shared understanding of consent, expected timeline, work and education plans, residence, financial responsibilities, children, care for parents, major health information and whether any earlier marriage is legally complete. An engagement is a social promise, not a nikah, so uncertainty should not be hidden merely to keep arrangements moving. The aim is not total agreement on every detail; it is to expose decisions that would be costly, painful or legally complicated to discover after public commitments are made.
