Direct conversation is most useful after basic identity and family information has been checked, but before either family treats the proposal as agreed. Research on marriage decision-making in Pakistan shows that family involvement and personal choice can exist together. The conversation should happen with both people’s consent, enough privacy for honest answers, and boundaries appropriate to the families involved. Waiting until engagement leaves little room to discover disagreement about work, residence, children, finances or family roles without creating public pressure.
