Is an engagement required before Nikah in Pakistan?

No. An engagement is a social announcement or promise and is not a legal condition for a Muslim marriage in Pakistan. The legal framework focuses on the nikah and its registration, not a prior ring ceremony, mangni or public event. Families may use an engagement to introduce relatives or plan the wedding, but it does not create the rights and duties of marriage and either party can still decline. Treating engagement as irreversible can create pressure that confuses social expense with the free consent required for nikah.
