Overseas Pakistanis & Marriage

How do transnational marriages affect migration and family formation among Pakistanis?

Answer

Direct answer

Transnational marriage can create a migration route for a spouse while renewing kinship, caregiving and economic links between Pakistan and an overseas community. British Pakistani research shows that these marriages may sustain extended-family networks and cousin-marriage practices, but are also shaped by immigration policy, citizenship, education and changing preferences. Marriage is not merely a visa transaction: it reorganizes residence, remittances, care and future children’s ties across countries. Evidence is strongest for particular diaspora settings and should not be generalized to all overseas Pakistanis or destinations.
