How do gross weight and net gold weight differ in a stone-set necklace?

Answer

Direct answer

Gross weight includes the whole item; net gold weight should exclude stones and other components that are not part of the stated gold alloy.

Ask the seller to itemise those deductions and explain whether the stones were weighed separately or estimated. The rate and purity must then be applied to the appropriate metal weight. Keep the calculation with the invoice and any assay record. A heavy necklace is not necessarily a larger gold purchase if a substantial part of its weight comes from stones, filling or other materials.
