What does Pakistani law say about dowry and bridal gifts?

Direct answer
The Dowry and Bridal Gifts (Restriction) Act separately defines dowry, bridal gifts and presents, excludes Haq Mehr from bridal gifts, and places restrictions on marriage-related transfers and display. It also states that dowry and bridal gifts given to the bride vest absolutely in her. Provincial amendments and enforcement arrangements can affect the applicable limits and procedure, so the current local text matters. The law regulates these transfers; it does not make dowry a condition of nikah or give another household ownership of the bride’s property.
