Is dowry legally required for marriage in Pakistan?

Direct answer
No. Dowry is not a legal requirement for a valid marriage in Pakistan, and it is separate from Haq Mehr. The Dowry and Bridal Gifts (Restriction) Act defines dowry as property given in connection with marriage by the bride’s family and regulates such transfers; it does not impose a duty to provide them. Haq Mehr, by contrast, is an obligation recorded in the marriage contract from the husband to the wife. Presenting dowry as mandatory confuses a social practice with law and can create coercive financial pressure.
