How should a guest respond when a couple requests no gifts?

Direct answer
Respect a clear no-gifts request rather than assuming an expensive surprise is more considerate.
If the wording leaves genuine uncertainty, ask privately whether a card or another non-material gesture is welcome. Do not use the question to pressure the couple into accepting money or publishing a wish list. A no-gifts invitation is not an invitation to judge what other guests bring. Thoughtfulness can mean honouring the recipients' boundary, particularly when they are managing limited space, travel or personal preferences.
