Wedding Gifts

How should a family distinguish a wedding gift from a loan or temporarily borrowed item?

Answer

Direct answer

Ask whether ownership is being transferred or whether the item must be returned, repaid or held on someone else's behalf.

Record the owner, recipient and any agreed conditions before the item is used or moved. For a loan, clarify the return date, care and loss arrangements; for money, establish whether repayment is expected. Avoid relying on an ambiguous phrase such as for the wedding. If the parties disagree later, preserve the records and obtain appropriate advice rather than treating possession alone as proof of a gift.
