How should a bride assess an heirloom outfit before deciding to restore it?

Direct answer
Assess an heirloom's fabric strength and damage before deciding whether it can be worn, altered or only displayed.
Look for splitting folds, loose embroidery, weakened seams, stains and signs of pests without pulling the fabric to test it. A textile conservator can distinguish stabilisation from cosmetic repair and explain irreversible changes. Record its condition and agree what must be preserved before cutting or cleaning. Sentimental importance does not make an old garment strong enough for a full wedding day.
