How important is family background in Pakistani matrimonial decisions?

Answer

Direct answer

Family background matters in many Pakistani matrimonial decisions because marriage can connect households as well as individuals. Kinship, reputation, language, sect, education and perceived social compatibility may all be evaluated, but no national survey produces a single importance percentage. The Pakistan DHS shows why family networks remain structurally relevant: close-relative marriages are common and family involvement in spouse choice is substantial, although most interviewed women reported some say in selecting their husband. Family background is therefore influential without being measurable as one uniform national preference.
