Research describes family involvement as a sequence rather than a single decision. Relatives may identify candidates, exchange household information and conduct background checks; prospective spouses may then communicate and assess compatibility; parents and elders often return to negotiate timing, dower, ceremonies and living arrangements. The balance differs by family and cannot be assigned a national percentage. The DHS measure that 80.5% of women had a say in husband selection is compatible with strong family participation, because personal agency and family facilitation can occur in the same marriage.
