How can financial stress affect a marriage?
Last reviewed:
Direct answer
Financial stress can enter a marriage through uncertainty, debt, unmet expectations and arguments over whose needs come first. A three-year study of 280 newlywed couples found financial strain associated with declining warmth and greater concern about marital instability, although it was not conducted in Pakistan and should not be treated as a local prevalence estimate. Income alone is not the whole issue. Secrecy, unequal control and unclear obligations can deepen strain, while transparent budgets, shared priorities and realistic support for relatives make the pressure easier to address together.
