What does a gemstone laboratory report verify and what does it not value?
Last reviewed:
Direct answer
A laboratory report identifies or grades specified characteristics; it is not automatically an appraisal, insurance value or resale guarantee.
Read which services the report actually covers, match its description and number to the item, and verify it through the issuing laboratory. Some reports concern a loose stone rather than the complete set or its metal. Ask separately about treatments and any limitations. A seller's claim that a piece is certified is incomplete unless the buyer can understand what was examined and what the result establishes.
