What should be agreed before a tailor cuts an heirloom or sentimental textile?
Last reviewed:
Direct answer
Agree exactly what may be cut, removed or permanently changed before a tailor works on a sentimental textile.
Photograph the original condition, identify parts that must survive and ask whether the fabric is strong enough for the proposed use. Consider reversible mounting or a separate new garment if preservation matters more than wearability. A conservator may be needed for a fragile heirloom. Permission to make an outfit should not be treated as unrestricted approval to discard embroidery, borders or offcuts.
