How do a sherwani and an achkan differ in cut and styling?

Last reviewed:

Answer

Direct answer

An achkan is often sold as a lighter, more closely shaped long coat, while a sherwani may have heavier structure or embellishment.

The distinction is not consistent across designers: some explicitly sell an achkan-style sherwani. Compare the garment's length, lining, flare and collar rather than treating the label as a fixed rule. Try it with the intended kurta and trousers, and ask which elements can be altered. Neither name establishes a religious requirement or guarantees a particular fit.
