When should a wedding purchase require written approval from the person who will use it?

Direct answer
Get the intended user's approval when a purchase affects personal fit, appearance, comfort or a substantial commitment made on their behalf.
Show the actual specification, cost and any substitution before ordering, especially for customised clothes or jewellery. Agree what a helper may decide independently and when they must check back. A surprise should not create an obligation to wear something uncomfortable or accept unwanted debt. Clear approval protects both the purchaser's effort and the wearer's choice.
