What should be agreed before relatives give wedding speeches?
Last reviewed:
Direct answer
Agree the speaker, length and content boundaries before a wedding speech, especially where private or sensitive information could be mentioned.
Ask the couple which stories, photographs or jokes are unwelcome and give the announcer a clear stopping cue. Keep surprise announcements out unless the people affected have agreed. A short introduction and an approximate speaking slot help the programme run smoothly. Being a relative or paying for part of the event does not create unlimited permission to disclose another person's history publicly.
