Is a Nikah legally valid in Pakistan if it is not registered with the Union Council?

Direct answer
Section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance makes registration compulsory for every Muslim marriage, but the Ordinance does not say that failure to register automatically makes an otherwise valid nikah void. An unregistered marriage can nevertheless create serious proof, inheritance, maintenance, immigration and identity-document problems, and non-registration can expose responsible persons to legal consequences. Validity and proof depend on the facts, applicable personal law and evidence, so a disputed case requires advice from a qualified Pakistani family lawyer.
