How can living with extended family affect married couples?

Extended-family living can provide housing, childcare, elder care, income pooling and emotional support. It can also reduce privacy or create conflict over chores, money, mobility and authority. These are possibilities to discuss, not effects that can be inferred from family size.

The cited Northern Punjab study concerns educated married women’s labour supply; it is not a national causal estimate. Agree on expenses, rooms, caregiving and private decisions. A “joint family” label does not reveal whether support is shared fairly.
