What is the difference between prompt and deferred Haq Mehr?
Last reviewed:
Direct answer
Prompt dower is payable when demanded according to the marriage contract, while deferred dower becomes payable at the agreed later event or time, commonly dissolution or death if the contract is written that way. The Nikahnama should state the division clearly. Section 10 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance supplies an important default: when the mode of payment is not specified, the entire dower is presumed payable on demand. That makes leaving the prompt-versus-deferred column unclear a potentially significant financial mistake.
