What can birth timing after marriage show about family formation?

Direct answer

The survey groups live births according to how long the mother had been married, alongside sex of the child and urban-rural residence. This helps describe the timing of births after marriage and supports fertility analysis. It cannot show whether couples intended the timing, experienced infertility, used contraception, or considered their relationship successful. Duration-of-marriage tables are demographic measures of recorded births, not guidance about when a couple should have children or evidence of compatibility.
