What should someone do when a false public announcement claims they are engaged?

Answer

Direct answer

Preserve the announcement, make a clear correction through a safe channel and ask the publisher or platform to remove the false claim.

Tell relevant trusted contacts that no such agreement exists without exposing additional private information. Avoid arguing with a threatening person or arranging a meeting simply to settle the rumour. If the behaviour involves harassment, impersonation or danger, seek appropriate official or legal help. A public engagement claim is not evidence of consent, and correcting it should not require continuing an unwanted relationship.
