How can prospective spouses agree on who may speak to a clinician about a disclosed condition?

Answer

Direct answer

Ask the patient what information may be discussed, with whom and for what purpose before contacting their clinician.

Arrange any consultation through the clinician's proper consent process and limit questions to the agreed scope. Being a prospective spouse or relative does not automatically provide unrestricted access to an adult's health information. Record or reconfirm permission when circumstances change. The clinician must apply professional and legal duties; a family agreement cannot require disclosure that is inappropriate or outside the patient's consent.
