What is the difference between a proposal, engagement and nikah?

A proposal or rishta discussion is an expression of interest. An engagement is usually a family or social commitment to proceed. Nikah is the marriage contract.

Families may use these words differently, so it is important to clarify what each step means in that family: whether dates are fixed, whether documents are involved, and whether either side can still step back.
