Wedding Catering Menu Ideas for Mehndi, Barat and Walima, With Per Head Costs

Menu ideas for every Pakistani wedding event, how per head catering prices work, how to plan quantities, and buffet or served meal options.

Pakistani wedding catering spread with biryani, karahi, kebabs, naan and kheer.

Food is the part of a wedding every guest talks about. A good menu makes elders happy and guests leave smiling, while a weak one is remembered for years. Weddme lists 1,011 caterers, and many publish their menus. This guide gives you menu ideas for each event, explains how per head pricing works, and helps you plan the right quantities.

How catering prices work

Most Pakistani caterers charge per head. The price depends on the number of dishes, the type of meat, the dessert and any live counters. Some caterers also offer a hall and catering package together. When you compare quotes, make sure each one covers the same number of dishes, the same meat and the same service staff.

Per head prices vary a lot between cities and caterers, and they change with meat prices through the year. Ask three caterers for a written quote for the same menu and guest count, and compare them line by line.

Menu ideas for each event

Mehndi or mayun

Mehndi menus are usually lighter and more fun. Families often choose BBQ, chicken karahi, haleem or a biryani, with naan, salad and a simple dessert such as kheer or gajar ka halwa in winter. Live chaat, gol gappay or a tea and coffee counter keep guests happy through the dancing.

Barat

The barat menu is usually the biggest. A common pattern is one rice dish such as biryani or pulao, one or two curries such as qorma or karahi, naan, salad, raita and a dessert. Many families add a second dessert or a live dessert counter for a special touch.

Walima

The walima is often more formal. Families choose a rich main dish, a rice dish, naan, salad and dessert, sometimes with a starter such as soup or kebabs. Elegant presentation matters here, because it is the groom's family hosting.

Planning quantities

Caterers plan food per guest, but wedding guest lists rarely stay fixed. A few practical rules help:

  • Give a realistic guest count. Count confirmed families, not the whole invitation list.
  • Ask about the buffer. Many caterers prepare a little extra. Ask how many extra plates are included in the price.
  • Plan for children. Some caterers charge less for small children. Ask before you finalise numbers.
  • Think about timing. If dinner is served late, guests eat more starters. Plan the starter quantities with that in mind.

Buffet or served meal?

Buffets are the most common style at Pakistani weddings. They are flexible and let guests choose. Served meals, where waiters bring food to the table, feel more formal and help elders, but need more staff. Some families do both: a buffet for most guests and table service for elders and the families' tables. Ask the caterer how many waiters they will bring for your guest count.

Dietary needs and special guests

Ask your caterer about less spicy options for elders and children, sugar free desserts for guests with diabetes, and a simple dish for anyone with a food allergy. These small additions show care for your guests and rarely cost much.

Food safety and hygiene

Ask where the food will be cooked, how it will travel to the venue, and how it will be kept hot. Visit the caterer's kitchen if you can. Clean kitchens, covered food and staff in clean uniforms are good signs. If the hall has its own kitchen, ask whether the caterer will cook there.

Menus at three budget levels

Every family has a different budget, and a good caterer can plan a satisfying menu at each level. Use these as starting points when you talk to caterers:

LevelWhat it usually includes
SimpleOne rice dish, one curry, naan, salad and one dessert
StandardRice, two curries or a curry and BBQ, naan, salad, raita, one or two desserts and cold drinks
PremiumA starter, rice, mutton and chicken mains, live BBQ or a special counter, several desserts, cold drinks and tea

Ask each caterer to quote all three levels for your guest count. Seeing them side by side makes it easier to decide where an upgrade is worth it.

Drinks, tea and the last course

Cold drinks and mineral water are often charged separately, so ask. A tea or kashmiri chai counter at the end of the evening is a popular touch in winter. Desserts are what guests remember last: kheer, zarda, gajar ka halwa, gulab jamun and ice cream are all favourites. If your budget allows only one upgrade, many families choose a better dessert.

Serving time and flow

Agree the serving time with both the hall and the caterer. Food served too late leaves guests hungry and tired, and food served too early may go cold. Plan the order of the evening, such as arrival, stage photos, rasams and then dinner, and share it with the caterer so they can time the cooking.

Questions to ask before you decide the menu

  • Which dishes are your strongest, the ones guests ask about?
  • Can you adjust the spice level for elders and children?
  • How do you keep naan fresh and warm through the evening?
  • Which desserts are best served hot, and which cold?
  • Can we change one dish after booking, and until when?

Live counters and special touches

Live counters have become very popular at Pakistani weddings. A BBQ grill, a fresh naan tandoor, a chaat stall or a hot dessert counter adds energy and lets guests watch food being made. They usually cost extra and need more space and staff, so ask the caterer and the hall together. One well run live counter often makes more impact than adding another curry to the buffet.

For a personal touch, some families add a dish from their home region, such as a special pulao or a family dessert recipe. Ask your caterer whether they can cook it well before you add it to the menu.
